State and local COVID-19 mandates:  updates will be given as they are recieved from the Governor and/or counties and in turn from MSU.  As each workshop dates approach, participants will be given updates relating date/location changes and given options for attendance and alternatives.  If the number of participants is cut, those who register and pay earliest will have preference for attendance.

Forest Stewardship   Master Forest Steward Workshops


 Forest Tree Selection and Fire Hazard Reduction

This workshop will focus on identifying individual tree characteristics for selection harvesting and thinning for ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir and western larch. Tree crown characteristics, growth rates, insects and diseases and site preferences will be discussed and shown in field settings. In addition, different slash treatments will be discussed and shown. Class includes about 2 hours in a class room setting and multiple field site visits on Lubrecht Experimental Forest and a visit to the thinning and prescribed burning demonstration site at Bandy Ranch near Ovando.  Expect to walk up to ½ mile through forest and meadow settings.

Forest Soils and Ecology

This workshop will cover basic soils characteristics and concerns with regard to tree growth, harvesting, slash disposal and grazing. We will spend about 2-3 hours in a class setting and the rest of the day examining soils, plant communities and management impacts on soils. Expect to walk about ½ mile at a time in the Lubrecht Experimental Forest.
