Secondary processors add further value to primary forest products. For example, a millwork manufacturer buys lumber from a sawmill and then mills it to produce moldings, which in turn are sold to home builders and retailers.

In 1999 Montana had about 202 secondary forest products manufacturers that sold an estimated $211 million dollars worth of product. The major categories of secondary producers in Montana are:

  • Furniture and cabinets
  • Trusses and other structural components
  • Millwork, window and door parts
  • Specialty artistic products

In Montana primary and secondary processors have organized into the Montana Wood Products Association, a group that serves as the major voice for the forest products industry with the media, state government, legislature, and the public.
